PRE-SCHOOL CLASSES, LEVELS 1-3
Kids, ages 3-5, should enroll in a pre-school swimming classes. Students are taught the same skills as in the Basic Level 1 through 3 courses, but on a smaller scale to accommodate the learning ability of younger kids.
PARENT AND TOT
These classes are for parents and their children, ages 6 months to 3 years. In these classes, they sing songs, introduce children to the water, blow bubbles and build an aquatic foundation of comfort in and around the water. It is required that a person 15 years or older enter the water with the infant/toddler. Make-up lessons will be provided at the fitness center's discretion and will only be held on Fridays if decided. The center is not responsible for inclement weather. Refunds/credits will not be issued for weather problems.
BASIC SWIM LESSONS
Kids who are 6 and older should enroll in Levels 1-6, depending on their skill set. Select a level to read more about what skills are taught.
LEVEL 1 - SKILLS TAUGHT
- Enter water using ladder, steps or side
- Exit water using ladder, steps or side
- Blowing Bubbles, 3 sec.
- Bobbing, 3 times
- Open eyes under water, retrieve object 2 times (shallow water)
- Front glide, 2 body lengths
- Recover from a front glide to a stand
- Back glide, 2 body lengths
- Back float, 3 sec.
- Recover from a back float or glide to a stand
- Roll from front to back
- Roll from back to front
- Treading using arm and hand actions (chest-deep water)
LEVEL 2 - SKILLS TAUGHT
- Enter water by stepping or jumping from side (shoulder deep water
- Exit water w/ ladder, steps or side (chest deep water)
- Fully submerge, holding breath 5 sec.
- Bobbing, 5 times (chest deep water)
- Open eyes under water, retrieve objects 2 times (chest deep water)
- Front float, 5 sec.
- Jellyfish float, 5 sec.
- Tuck float, 5 sec.
- Front glide, 2 body lengths
- Recover from a front float or glide to a stand
- Back float, 15 sec.
- Back glide, 2 body lengths
- Recover from a back float or glide to a stand
LEVEL 3 - SKILLS TAUGHT
- Enter water by jumping from the side (deep water)
- Headfirst entry from the side, sitting position (9 ft deep)
- Head first entry from the side, kneeling position (9 ft deep)
- Bobbing while moving toward safety, 5 times (chest deep water)
- Rotary breathing, 10 times
- Survival float on front, 30 sec (deep water)
- Back float, 30 sec. (deep water)
- Change from vertical to horizontal position on back, (deep water)
- Change from vertical to horizontal position on front (deep water)
- Tread water, 30 sec. (deep water)
- Push off in streamlined position
LEVEL 4 - SKILLS TAUGHT
- Headfirst entry from the side in a com-pact position (9 ft deep)
- Headfirst entry from the side in a stride position (9 ft deep)
- Swim under water, 3-5 body lengths
- Feet first surface dive, submerging completely
- Survival swimming, 30 sec (deep water)
- Front Crawl open turn / backstroke open turn
- Tread water using 2 kinds of kicks, 2min.
- Front crawl, 25 yards
- Breast stroke, 15 yards
- Butterfly, 15 yards
- Push off in streamline position
LEVEL 5 - SKILLS TAUGHT
- Shallow-angle entry dive from the side (9 ft deep)
- Shallow-angle dive, glide 2 body lengths and begin any stroke ( 9 ft water)
- Tuck surface dive, submerge completely
- Pike surface dive, submerge completely
- Front flip turn while swimming
- Backstroke flip turn while swimming
- Tread water, 5 min.
- Front crawl, 50 yards
- Breast stroke, 25 yards
- Butterfly, 25 yards
- Elementary backstroke, 50 yards
LEVEL 6 - SKILLS TAUGHT
- Front crawl, 100 yards
- Elementary backstroke, 100 yards
- Back crawl, 50yards
- Breast stroke, 50 yards
- Sidestroke, 50 yards
- Butterfly, 50 yards
- Front crawl open turn while swimming
- Backstroke open turn while swimming
- Front flip turn while swimming
- Backstroke flip turn while swimming
- Sidestroke turn while swimming
- Butterfly turn while swimming
- Breast stroke turn while swimming
